Aur Atoll

FACT FILE

Number of islets: 42. Population RMI Census 2021: 317 (172 males and 145 females). Land area: 2.17 square miles. Lagoon area: 92.58 square miles. Airstrip at Tobal Mayor: Hesa Kaious. Nitijela Member: President Hilda Heine. Yacht permit fee: $25.

Aur is 80 miles north of Majuro. The atoll’s women are expert handicraft makers, while many of the men carve miniature traditional canoes for sale on Majuro, many of which are then sold by the store owners on the internet. In September of 2008, I sailed to Aur with my husband Cary on our yacht Seal and spent five days enjoying the villages of Aur Aur, which is where yachts should check in, and Tobal. As we strolled through the village of Aur Aur, we spied a mother using a wheelbarrow to take her kids home. Nearby Clancy Peter was tenderizing an octopus before cooking. Each Constitution Day, all the Aur residents get together in one village, rotating between Aur Aur and Tobal each year.

THE AUR ATOLL FLAG

The Aur Atoll flag is red with a square blue canton bearing 21 white stars inside its edge and the seal in the center, four blue stars on the red field below the canton, a radiating white over blue stripe extending from the lower hoist to the upper fly, and three white birds in flight above the stripe. Source: crwflags.com, which wrote "A Ralik Ratak softball tournament was held in Arizona, US. The team representing Aur atoll displayed a team banner with a flag on it (pictured)."

Researching our Reefs

Marine scientists are regular visitors to the Marshall Islands. Their specific research topics vary, but most choose the Marshalls because our reefs are so accessible … plus those that aren’t so accessible, on the remote outer islands, are truly unique.
