Fresh fish from the outer islands can be found at the fish market next to Uliga Dock. Shopping at the market is win-win for you (delicious fish) and for the people on the outer islands (hard to come by dollars). The facility was built with funds from Japan and was completed in 2011. It is operated by the Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority (MIMRA).
As well as fresh fish, the market’s staff prepare dried fish jerky, which is approved for mailing overseas. If you need ice in large quantities, the fish market is the place to buy (it’s good quality and its water is fine for drinking).
To give you an idea of how often the Majuro market has fresh fish in one year, follows is an excerpt from the MIMRA Annual Report FY2024:
The Outer Islands Fish Market Center (OIFMC) on Majuro receives fish and continued to provide fishers with income in 2024 by directly purchasing fish and fish products from fishers on remote atolls. In 2024, Coastal vessels made 39 trips to five atolls. The number of trips was fewer than the 62 in 2023 but reflected vessel availability. Those 39 trips accounted for collecting 52,238 pounds of fish from the Neighboring Islands, a significant increase over the 32,576 pounds the previous year. The revenue that went to fishers totaled $95,234 — also up from the $73,871 in 2023.
For the Arno fishers, a total of 13,826 pounds of fish were purchased at a value of $32,677; 17,189 pounds of fish were purchased from Aur fishers at a value of $29,439; Maloelap fishers received $23,966.36 for 13,878 pounds of fish; Jaluit fishers received $4,166 for 4,791 pounds of fish; and Wotje fishers received $4,985 for 2,551 pounds of fish.
